Role Profile

 

Job Title: Head of Education - Sowenna

 

Hours: Full time based on a 6 term year

 

Responsible to: ExecutivePrincipal Medical Provision

 

Direct Supervisory All staff in AP Academy

 

Responsible for: The provision of education for children within the Tier 4 Camhs provision

Main Purpose of Job:

 

To be operationally responsible for the Educational provision within Sowenna (Camhs Tier 4 In-patient Unit) and support the Executive Principal in making strategic evaluations of teaching, learning, personnel and provision.

 

To fulfil the statutory obligations of the LA towards children educated out of school for medical reasons from 3 to 16 years.

 

All teachers are expected to be aware of and maintain professional standards for qualified teacher status.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

You are required to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in para 57.1 of the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document as follows:

 

“…a teacher employed as a teacher (other than a head teacher) in a school shall perform in accordance with any directions which may reasonably be given to him/her the Principal from time to time, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned to him/her”

Duties:

  • In liaison with the medical team, manage the provision of education for all students within Sowenna
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the educational provision, the In-Patient Unit and the mainstream schools
  • Take on role of Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Be SENCo and Exams officer for the provision
  • Ensuring efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources
  • Timetable appropriate staff and groupings of children within Sowenna
  • Ensure outstanding teaching leads to significant progression and attainment for all pupils
  • Ensure that the learning experiences planned for children adequately match their abilities and needs
  • Ensure that the curriculum coverage is appropriate and balanced, and that continuity, progression and breadth of experience are present throughout the planning and implementation processes
  • Ensure that equality of opportunity exists in all areas
  • Ensure that sound relationships are fostered between children, their peers and adults alike
  • Act as a confidante to the children whilst being aware of and following current safeguarding/child protection guidelines
  • Management of teaching and non-teaching staff associated with the provision, to include monitoring of appraisals and staff performance management
  • Day to day management of the administration of the education unit
  • Teach a range of subjects to student from 13 – 18
  • Review present practice regularly and attend courses as appropriate to further professional development
  • Perform other duties as requested by your line manager

Professional Development

  • Attend CPD.
  • Feedback to staff at in-service sessions the outcome of such courses.
  • Liaise with colleagues as appropriate.
  • Liaise with appropriate advisory staff.

Other Duties

  • Provision of up-to-date and accurate statistics
  • Negotiating and implementing school/CHES re-integration plans
  • Where appropriate, attending and/or contributing to meetings called by education and other agencies, including Child Protection, statutory reviews and Children In Children reviews;
  • To liaise with parents, medical staff, schools, LA staff and other agencies.
  • To maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for the Trust

The postholder is responsible for his/her own self-development on a continuous basis.

  • Leadership experience in APA or mainstream setting

  • Experience of successfully working with children with mental health needs
  • Proven record of behaviour management;
  • Experience of working with disaffected children either in a special or main-stream setting;

Education & Training

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Further qualification relevant to post
